BESS Investment Opportunities: Why Battery Energy Storage Is Attracting International Investors

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are becoming increasingly important for electricity systems worldwide.

As solar and wind generation expand, power systems require greater flexibility to balance variable renewable production with electricity demand.

Battery storage can absorb electricity during periods of excess supply and discharge it when electricity is more valuable or the grid requires additional support.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), 108 GW of new battery storage capacity was deployed globally in 2025, approximately 40% more than in 2024.

This expansion is creating opportunities for investors, independent power producers, infrastructure funds and energy developers.

What Is a BESS Project?

A Battery Energy Storage System stores electrical energy and releases it when required.

Utility-scale BESS projects are commonly developed as either:

Standalone BESS projects: Independent battery storage facilities connected to the electricity grid.

Co-located or hybrid BESS projects: Battery installations developed alongside renewable energy generation assets, such as solar photovoltaic or wind farms.

Both configurations can offer investment opportunities, but their technical requirements and commercial models may differ significantly.

Understanding MW and MWh in Battery Storage Investments

Investors should distinguish between battery power capacity and energy capacity.

  • MW (megawatts): The maximum power the system can charge or discharge.
  • MWh (megawatt-hours): The amount of energy the battery can store.
  • Storage duration: The energy capacity divided by the power rating.

For example, a 100 MW / 400 MWh battery system has a nominal storage duration of four hours at full rated power.

Battery duration is an important factor in project design and revenue optimisation.

How Do BESS Projects Generate Revenue?

The commercial viability of a BESS project depends on the electricity market and applicable regulations.

Potential revenue mechanisms include:

Electricity Price Arbitrage

Batteries can charge during periods of relatively low electricity prices and discharge when prices increase.

Profitability depends on electricity price spreads, round-trip efficiency, degradation and operating strategy.

Ancillary Services

BESS facilities may provide frequency response, reserve capacity and other electricity-system support services where relevant markets are available.

Capacity and Flexibility Services

In some jurisdictions, batteries can receive remuneration for making capacity available or providing flexibility to the electricity network.

These revenue streams are market-specific and must be assessed individually.

Key Risks for BESS Investors

Battery storage projects introduce investment risks that differ from conventional renewable generation.

Important considerations include:

  • Grid connection availability and conditions.
  • Battery degradation and warranty provisions.
  • Equipment replacement and augmentation costs.
  • Revenue uncertainty and competition between storage operators.
  • Fire protection, insurance and safety requirements.
  • Permitting and electricity market regulations.
  • Project financing and operational performance.

Investors should assess these factors through detailed technical, commercial, legal and financial due diligence.

BESS Investment Opportunities in Chile and International Markets

Chile has emerged as an important market for utility-scale battery storage, driven partly by high levels of solar generation and increasing demand for electricity-system flexibility.

Other international markets offer different opportunities depending on grid conditions, market design and the maturity of renewable energy infrastructure.
